UTA officials, including President Ian Joseph, attend cabinet meeting seeking clarity on registration fees (file photo)
The United Taxi Association has reached out to the government for clarification regarding the new license fees recently implemented by the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board.
This inquiry comes as members of the Association, including President Ian Joseph and Deputy Ian Richards, attended a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday to address misunderstandings surrounding the Transport Board’s payment requirements.
The Association initially believed its members were exempt from the newly imposed user fees affecting all vehicles operating throughout Antigua and Barbuda.
However, the Cabinet reaffirmed what the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board had previously communicated: each vehicle must pay a fee of $2.00 per week, totaling $100 annually.
This revenue will contribute to a dedicated fund aimed at repaying a $100 million loan for road repairs. Both parties have agreed on this operational framework moving forward.
During the meeting, taxi drivers highlighted the urgent need for road repairs leading to certain identified hotels.
The Cabinet acknowledged these concerns and expressed its willingness to raise them with the Ministry of Works.
I totally agree with the Taxi Association. Things are already getting dicey! Sigh.
So why they have to think they exempt when they using their vehicle to make money and people like me suffering the brunt of it just to drive my suv to work
