A well-known tattoo artist and influencer, Oszie Kelvin Russell, commonly known as ‘Mongoose,’ has been sentenced to spend almost 4 years in prison.

The 40-year-old pleaded guilty on Wednesday to unlawful possession of a Glock 80 Pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition and a silencer.

Police obtained a search warrant and raided his Lightfoot home on April 22 where he was caught throwing the weapon out of a window.

Following the discovery, Russell was arrested and charged.

Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel remanded him on Wednesday and brought him back to court this morning for sentencing.

Following the sentencing guidelines, she handed down a 3 year and 6 months sentence for the firearm, 1 year for the bullets and a year for the suppressor. However, the sentences will run concurrently.

You might as well shut up. Mongoose is not that type of man. You don’t know why he had the firearm. Nobody can trust the police so we all need to have a firearm. Just ride off mongoose back. There’s people with firearm who aren’t not even being charged

Was going to be difficult to escape prison sentence. Hope this would serve as an incentive and a lesson for other illegal gun holders to hand in their weapons before the amnesty is over.

Many people believed that because of his popularity and possible connections, he might have just received a slap on the wrist. If he had walked away with just a fine, it would’ve opened the door for Ed Archibald to appeal his own conviction. The ongoing Gun Amnesty clearly sends a message. Cases like Ed’s and Mongoose’s are being used as examples. If you have an illegal firearm, take it to the Police Headquarters and avoid the risk of ending up at Hotel 1735.

I really wonder if the police are conducting ballistic tests on these illegal firearms and ammunition they’re seizing and if they’re cross-referencing the results with unsolved murders on the island, or even sharing that data with neighboring territories. It would only make sense, but maybe I’m overthinking it with my little coconut here.

That sentence was way too light. Do people even realize what a silencer can do, especially when paired with an air compressor and 10 rounds? That’s not street-level stuff, that’s tactical gear built for silent execution. And yet, this feels like a slap on the wrist, a gift, even. Let’s not forget there are still missing people on this island. And if history teaches us anything, it’s that most serial killers were the ones no one ever suspected. But here’s what really needs to be asked, who’s bringing these guns into Antigua in the first place? Hmm yeah, them. The ones who never thought the same weapons would end up taking out two of their own. And Mongoose, if you really live in the bushes, maybe you can tell us who else is out there with you. Hopefully, you get a chance to meet Carl and explain why you were running his name through the dirt. Still, I can’t help but wonder maybe this was a setup. Maybe your kite was flying just a little too high, and certain people didn’t like that.

You might want to consider retaining the same attorney who represented that pilot convicted of drug trafficking a few years back the one who got 30 years but was quietly released after just a couple. That lawyer clearly knows how to work the system. He might be able to help you too.

I find the sentence far too lenient. Even licensed firearm holders aren’t permitted to own silencers, so for someone to be caught with one suggests clear criminal intent. The presence of silencers takes this to another level. The police need to seriously investigate the source of these firearms, and now silencers? This could escalate crime in Antigua to a dangerous new height.

He had no prior convictions, no criminal past to speak of. Gainfully employed, talented, and clearly skilled, he wasn’t some faceless figure lost in the system. He was a father to two small children and the primary support for his aging mother, a senior citizen. These are the kinds of details that usually sway a sentencing magistrate, encouraging a bit of judicial leniency under the law. But this time, it didn’t. One has to wonder, if those genuine, humanizing factors couldn’t tip the scales, then what chance would any “mongoose” have in escaping the trap? It calls attention to a deeper issue, how well are some adjudicators acquainted with the powers afforded to them under the Probation of Offenders Act, Chapter 345? Specifically, Section 2 grants clear discretion, yet it often feels underused. Is it a lack of familiarity? A lack of empathy? Or perhaps an unwillingness to extend that same mercy when the accused doesn’t come from more privileged corners of society? And what of the other cases, those less spoken of? Like the female public officer who reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks from a legally issued firearm. What became of that incident? Has it vanished into silence? While we ponder these questions, spare a thought for Mongoose and the family who lives just next door. Their world has been upended, and whatever the truth of his actions, their pain is real. Sometimes, all you can say is… walk good.

He was caught with 10 rounds, a silencer, and an air compressor this isn’t a joke. Those aren’t for protection, they’re for silent harm. Imagine if that weapon had hurt someone close to you, would you still feel empathy?
