PM Browne speaks on scarcity of Government lands for sale (file photo)
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has commented on the decades old problem with scarcity of public sector lands for sale in the nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Speaking on the Browne and Browne radio show last Saturday, the Prime Minister shed some light on the issue for prospective buyers.
“The public sector and the public entities, they don’t have a lot of lots available”, he said. “For every lot that they cut, there are at least ten applications.”
As an alternative, the Prime Minister encouraged residents to go after private sector land, which are located in better areas even though it might be a little bit more expensive.
“There are lots available in the private sector…but what seems to be happening with a number of people is that they are waiting to get the cheaper government land.”
Prime Minister Browne admitted that there doesn’t seem to be an easy fix to this issue, and hints at the problem becoming more compounded as time goes on.
“I can’t tell you that there’s going to be any overnight solution to this problem”, the PM stated. “This is not gonna get any better because, more and more you have a situation in which government land is becoming extremely scarce.”
I don’t think there is a shortage of land for a small population
Decade old problem my foot.
If them buy up land like it going out of style what do they expect.
So basically, unless you’re rich or lucky, you can’t own land in this country? Government land used to be the only way regular people could afford a piece of the rock. Sad to see that disappearing.
What’s the government doing to open up more land for development? Can’t they zone new areas? Maybe it’s time to look into land reform or incentives for private developers to make plots affordable.
Bro if you STOPPED GIVING AWAY GOV LAND TO EVERYONE THAT CALLS THEMESELF A INVESTOR ENOUGH WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR ANTIGUANS. WHY DIDNT YOU SEND THE FOREIGN INVESTORS TO THE MORE EXPENSIVE LANDS ??? I SWEAR THIS RUSSIAN WOMAN NEED TO HURRY UP!!!!! AND CARRY YOU WHEYEVER SHE INTEND TO!!!
Move to the front of the class Kizme azz gov. They just come and repeat this diatribe ever so often. Just pure BS!
I will reserve my comments. Sometimes you have to play the fool to continue fooling people who think they are fooling you
I cannot partake in discussions on this matter. Butttttt I don’t know of any county that have land to satisfy its entire population
So who are the individual owners of this “private land”? Did they buy their citizenship and that land or are they native born? 🤔 Logically, there would be a shortage of land if the vast majority of it is being sold to the wealthy leaving the little native born man to fight over scraps.
It’s great to see Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressing something other than the Alfa NERO. There are many other issues in Antigua that this old boat caused us so much trouble. Now, about the news article, the long-standing issue of scarce public sector lands for sale in Antigua and Barbuda is something to look into, and the prime minister is right. But how we are going to fix it is another issue.
