In a notable defiance of local regulations, Syrian vendors have been spotted selling fans near the V.C. Bird Bust, continuing their operations on the sidewalks despite a recent directive from the St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC).
This initiative aims to create a more organized environment in the city by restricting sidewalk vending.
Just weeks prior, the corporation instructed all vendors in the area to cease selling on the streets to align with their plans for urban improvements.
However, reports indicate that the Syrian vendors have largely ignored these instructions, choosing instead to resume their sales after 5 PM, when police presence is lessened.
Local authorities, including the police, have reportedly intervened multiple times, urging the vendors to relocate.
Vendors are seen packing up their merchandise, only to return to the sidewalks shortly afterward, leading to frustration among those who have complied with the regulations.
Many vendors who have moved into the city market are expressing their outrage at the perceived inequity in enforcement. One local vendor expressed concern, questioning, “Is it because of the colour of their skin?”
The sentiment reflects a growing frustration among those who feel that the regulations are not being applied fairly.
As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how the St. John’s Development Corporation and local law enforcement will address this ongoing issue with the Syrian vendors with more force.
The situation highlights broader themes of fairness and compliance within the local marketplace and raises questions about the treatment of different vendor groups in St. John’s.
Hmm 🤔 🤔 Don’t the policeman have the right to remove him by will or force..so there shouldn’t be no ongoing issue… Smh
They are foreigners. Anything to protect antiguas income
However the government will not stress on this cause they somewaht brings profit to the country. Let it be an Antiguan they would’ve been given tickets like the lady.
They a brazen as hell but we keep patronizing their businesses so we are the ones acclimating their nonesence. If the government says move then move. Our black people can move but your light colour skins can’t? Yes I am racist
When you are backed up by people in high places
Yes indeed. Ppl in high places indeed. They just have to go to Hadeed and our electricity getting cut off lol.
Look at this. Foreigners always have their way
If them dash dem way just one time I bet not one person boldly defies the police again.
You expect anything different. The government in bed with the SYrians. They owe them. They can do what they want. Syrians are taking over every little business and housing in this place. Well they may be need to specify that the order includes fan vendors too. Lol but then again they never left their fans out at nights
Oh hell no!!!! This must NEVER be allowed to happen here. No Syrian is to enjoy benefits and privileges that Antiguans and Barbudans cannot! There is a very fragile peace currently existing between these two groups and the government through the SJDC would do best NOT to disturb this paper-thin peace!!!! Take warning!!
Fine them rass and do away with the Trump mentality because no man is above the law. Fine them then lock up them disrespectful rass..
We need to hire Capt Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso for a week to teach Antigua government (Gaston), how to care for his people over foreigners, especially Syrians and Chinese. The Syrians need to obey the vending law set by SJDC… no selling/vending on the street of St Johns city.
Antigians need to wake up and do something about it, we lay there and let these people and the government walk allover us, we take everything they throw at us, most of them don’t pay taxes, and they get to as they like, THIS IS THE ISLAND OF THE MISSING
