It’s been over 20 years since the Labour Code was reviewed, but Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin has committed that they will be looking at it for the first time since its establishment.

Benjamin was speaking on state media on Labour Day morning when he made the revelation.

The Labour Code was passed in 1975.

This is welcome news for many, as several calls came from the Opposition and the Antigua Barbuda Workers Union’s top officials to address workers’ rights in this country.

According to the Labour Minister, it is imperative that it be reviewed and revised to keep up with the latest labour laws.

“Since then, there has not been any sort of review of that Labour Code. Regrettably, it has never been reviewed. This year, it is my intention, the government’s intention to revise and review the Labour Code. The first time since 1975. It will be a comprehensive review. We will look at the developments because things in 1975 have changed.”

“We have AI. We have other industries that have developed like the banking sector and hotel sector. Back then, we didn’t have these developments. So, therefore, it is incumbent on me as Minister of Labour to make sure our code, our laws keep track with the developments of the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.”

“Already I have had input from some individuals in society who are prepared and determined to make sure that we look at the code, review, revise it and bring it up to date with the 21st century. Later this year I can guarantee you that we will be going to Parliament with a comprehensive review of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Code,” Benjamin said.

Another bill, the Workmen’s Compensation Act, will also be reviewed and revised.
