Prime Minister Gaston Browne has sharply criticized a group of Antigua and Barbuda nationals living in the United States, accusing them of conducting a smear campaign to discredit the nation.

His comments came after a protest by this small group outside the venue in Washington, D.C. where he was meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other Caribbean leaders.

“What is happening is that senior members of the United Progressive Party (UPP) are collaborating with foreign mercenaries to destroy the image of the country. I happen to be the current prime minister, so they believe that by tearing me down they will undermine the prospects of the country, and they are doing this for power,” Browne said

Central to the Prime Minister’s remarks was the sale of the luxury yacht, Alfa Nero.

He assured the public that the US$40 million acquisition price was accounted for by the Ministry of Finance.

Browne noted that allegations of US$10 million being unaccounted for have changed over time, with opponents now suggesting the vessel was sold for US$50 million instead.

He emphasized the legitimacy of the sale, citing a signed affidavit from the buyer confirming the US$40 million price.

Browne further criticized the protesting individuals for attempting to mislead US officials regarding Antigua and Barbuda’s international relationships, specifically insinuating ties with China, Cuba, and Venezuela that could threaten US interests.

As part of their protest, the group utilized a mobile electronic billboard to advance their claims.

“These individuals are acting against the interests of Antigua and Barbuda. Their actions should be condemned in the strongest terms by men and women of good conscience,” he asserted.

According to the Prime Minister, the protestors are spreading falsehoods and misinformation, describing them as “mercenaries” funded by the UPP. He further alleged that the UPP has aligned itself with foreign interests, specifically suggesting connections to Russian funding.

  1. Going against your entire nation in trying to bring down one man…MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!!! IMHO, the opposition know they can’t win so they go about assasinating Prime Minister Browne’s character and in so doing demonstrate that they are some low down pond scum. Until there’s unrefuted evidence of the PM’s guilt in this regard, I will eat my words. Until then, I said what I said!!!

  2. Mark these beasts with indelible ink. We need to know who our real traitors are. They need to be accorded treatment reserved for such scum.
Fair Antigua and Barbuda, we thy loyal sons and daughters stand. Ever ready at a moment’s notice to rise in defense of our motherland, against those de-raccinated residents and non-residents who have the temerity and gall to refer to themselves as nationals of thos beautiful country!

    • It is really poor from these ppl to do that to the Prime Minister. The funny thing is that quite a few of the former UPP members have crossed over to the ABLP.
