VIDEO: Gov’t Supports Gradual Minimum Wage Increase

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) has called for an urgent increase in the national minimum wage, but Prime Minister Gaston Browne has indicated that the matter is more complex than it appears.

The ABWU supports its proposal by highlighting the rising cost of living, arguing that a wage increase is essential for the survival of residents.

In a recent statement, the union said, “As the cost of living continues to soar, our most vulnerable workers— including single mothers, youth, and low-income earners—are bearing the brunt of an economic crisis that has been exacerbated by government policy and neglect.”

  1. They should. If taxes can go up gradually, then minimum wage should as well.

  2. I agree the minimum wage should increase but certainly not by the 50 percent margin the union is proposing

  3. Gradual is the key word. That gradual could take centuries. But gradual is gradual. Whichever this had been the only government to increase fees after many many years.
