Operations Manager Rawle Reynolds has revealed that only 28 to 32 percent of cruise passengers currently participate in organized shore excursions, representing massive untapped economic potential for local businesses.

To better understand visitor behaviour and spending patterns, the port is implementing new electronic tracking systems. These will include smartphone-based tagging methods to provide detailed statistics on passenger movements beyond traditional tour participants.

“Most of the vessels that come here, it’s been a very tedious process of trying to track their actual number of passengers actually disembark on land,” Reynolds explained, noting the new systems will provide “unique numbers [of those] who actually come into our shores broken down significantly.”
