LIAT Aiming for Expansion with New Funding Vision from AfriExim Bank

Prime Minister Gaston Browne celebrates with executives and government members at LIAT 20 Inaugural Flight Celebration

The regional airline LIAT, reborn as “LIAT 2020,” is setting its sights on further expansion with plans to seek additional funding from AfriExim Bank. This move aligns with the airline’s ambitious growth vision and reflects its determination to regain prominence within the Caribbean aviation sector.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed his commitment to LIAT, stating, “LIAT is Antigua, and LIAT is Caribbean. It is the pride of the Caribbean.” His remarks highlight the importance of regional solidarity and ownership among Caribbean nationals to ensure the airline’s success in a critical service sector.

LIAT has shown remarkable resilience since its near-collapse in 2020, gradually finding its footing through strategic investments and strong political support. According to Browne, by the end of 2025, the airline plans to operate six to seven aircraft, marking a significant milestone in its recovery.

One of the most notable developments in LIAT’s resurgence is the expansion of its services into Jamaica, featuring direct flights—a major step towards enhancing inter-island connectivity. Additionally, this growth phase is projected to create approximately 200 new jobs, positively affecting the middle class in Antigua and Barbuda and beyond.

As part of its revitalization efforts, LIAT is also considering a rebranding initiative, potentially adopting the name “LIAT Air.” This new branding is expected to symbolize not just the airline’s recovery but also the resilience and spirit of the Caribbean.

While some regional governments withdrew support from the earlier LIAT structure, Antigua and Barbuda has taken firm action, forging partnerships with external regional entities to revive the airline. Discussions are ongoing to approach AfriExim Bank for further financial assistance, underscoring LIAT’s ongoing ambition for growth and expansion.

Prime Minister Browne strongly called for regional support for the revitalization of LIAT. This represents a collective effort to nurture and prioritize a crucial service in the Caribbean, fostering a sense of pride and ownership among its nations.
