UK rich list for 2025 revealed (The Times)
At this time of year it has become customary for a list of the UK’s wealthiest people to be compiled by the Sunday Times publication and for the fourth successive year, the table is topped by the billionaire Hinduja family.
The Rich List is not just limited to UK citizens, but also includes individuals and families born overseas who predominantly work and/or live in Britain.
Among the prominent figures in the top reaches of the list are the likes of inventor Sir James Dyson and part-owner of Manchester United FC, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
The annual list is collated by Robert Watts, who noted: “The combined wealth of those who feature in our research is falling and we are also finding fewer of the world’s super rich are coming to live in the UK.”
There has been a drop this year in the number of billionaires – ranked by net wealth – in the country, down to 156 from 165.
Public info acts as the source
The Sunday Times Rich List is updated annually and contains the 1,000 wealthiest people or families of the United Kingdom.
It has been a staple of the popular national newspaper since 1989, with the estimated wealth of individuals obtained from a range of public information, based on values in the January of each year.
These can include land, property, shares in publicly quoted companies, art and even racehorses.
Higher value than Swiss GDP
Mr Watts explained how researchers found a wide variety of self-made entrepreneurs building fortunes from artificial intelligence and new technologies, to makeup and radiators.
He said this year’s list of the top 350 hold a combined wealth of £772.8 billion, which is actually larger than the annual GDP of Switzerland.
Billionaires falling
The drop in billionaires was the third year in a row where the number on the list fell and this time it comes amid criticism on policies by the new Labour government.
Even Gopi Hinduja and family have seen a drop of just under £2bn; nevertheless, they comfortably retained their position in top spot with 35.304bn, making it four years running that they take the honour of being Britain’s richest family.
They made their fortune from the Mumbai-based conglomerate Hinduja Group, which spans business sectors including banking and finance, media and entertainment, and energy, and employs around 200,000 staff, all around the world.

His majesty King Charles III makes it into the list at joint 238th position with an estimated wealth of £640m.
