The opening of Tranquility Cemetery has been pushed back

June 16 was the most recent timeline given for the opening of the Tranquility Cemetery in Tomlinsons but that has been delayed.

A new date was not given but Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant did provide on update on the cause of the latest delays.

As with these things, trying to get things correct before starting, the cemetery will be utilizing new methods in terms of the burial and the operations. It will not be in the fashion that you are accustom at the old cemetery…A number of items were being procured. There were some delays in procuring those items to facilitate the modern type of burial and I can say to you that in a few short weeks there will a blessing of the area and then burials will commence very soon there at the Sir George Walter Highway,” Merchant explained.

The new cemetery is being built to help alleviate the strain at the St. Johns Public Cemetery.

The Tranquility Park Cemetery will feature uniform and tidy graves, and a non-denominational chapel.

  2. To get a piece of land ready for burials taken this long?? Lord, help me! Somebody please tell me this is a joke! They need to start burying people there now and work on the other issues. What else they need to be doing with the dirt?? Dig the holes and start dropping the dead in!! The church service can be held under a tent if the chapel isn’t ready, and for the public cemetery administrative office, can remain where it is as temporary.
When additional lands were allocated at Lambert and Valley Cemeteries to buried people didn’t stay this long to prepare the lands.
Is this new public cemetery at Tomlinson another election gimmick—general election closer than we think?

  3. Doesn’t come as a surprise. I did expect to hear that it has been delayed! Everything the governor is doing is worst than LIAT1974! There’s always a delay

  4. What does digging into the ground has to do with the delay of opening the burial grounds? I am tired of these lame and incompetent excuses. The time this cemetery opened, it would time to allocate another piece of land for a public cemetery. You know what happened when a population keep growing.

  7. I’m all for innovation in burial methods, but let’s not let ‘modernization’ be the excuse for standing still. This isn’t a museum it’s a cemetery, and the need is urgent.
