Service Disruption and Temporary Road Closure

The APUA Water Business Unit wishes to inform the general public that emergency repair works will commence at approximately 6:00 p.m. this evening along Independence Avenue, between High Street and Nevis Street.

These works follow a pipeline rupture near the Treasury Building. Aged cast iron pipelines will be replaced with new PVC pipes.

The Water Business Unit also takes this opportunity to address the ongoing challenges associated with the aged and complex pipeline infrastructure in the city of St. John’s. Many of these lines were installed decades ago without detailed drawings.

As a result, pipelines are often found overlapping or running along the middle or sides beneath the road surface. This makes it increasingly difficult to identify the exact location of faults, and in some instances, additional leaks may occur during replacement works.

To facilitate the repairs safely, the affected section of Independence Avenue will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic. APUA is working in close collaboration with the Ministry of Works to ensure the timely reinstatement of the road surface upon completion.

Customers in the areas of King Obstinate Drive, Green Bay, Ovals, Camacho Avenue, and the eastern side of Corn Alley may experience a temporary disruption in water supply during this time.

We sincerely thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work to strengthen and modernize the island’s water distribution network.

  4. No detailed drawings of the old pipelines? That’s alarming. We need a modern, mapped digital utility grid to avoid more digging in the dark.
