Political analyst Peter Wickham
Political analyst Peter Wickham has expressed optimism regarding Harold Lovell’s chances of securing the All-Saints West seat in the upcoming general elections, constitutionally due in 2028.
This assertion follows the recent announcement from the United Progressive Party (UPP) confirming Lovell’s candidacy against Anthony Smith, the current Agriculture Minister, who has transitioned to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
Wickham stated in a response to Antigua.news that Lovell’s prospects appear stronger than during his previous contest for the St John’s City East seat.
“As to whether or not he will win the seat, he has a good chance of winning. Certainly, it’s a more likely outcome than was his scenario when he contested St John’s City West,” he remarked.
The shifting political dynamics could play to Lovell’s advantage, according to Wickham, particularly in the wake of Smith’s unexpected departure from the UPP.
“Certainly, the current MP has defected and will take some support with him, but there may very well be enough residual support there, especially if there is a swing away from the Antigua Labour Party for him to be able to take it,” Wickham said.
However, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the election conditions, stating, “These are all conditionals, these are all ifs, and I don’t know whether those conditions will exist when an election is called. We also don’t know when an election will be called.”
Meanwhile, Wickham expressed his surprise regarding Lovell’s decision to re-enter the political arena.
“I am surprised by his re-entry into politics as I pretty much thought that after being Minister of Finance and leading the UPP unsuccessfully twice, he would have hung up his political boots. It’s interesting that he’s come back, especially considering that UPP is currently undergoing some turmoil and has not settled under the leadership of Jamal Pringle,” he told Antigua.news
In his interview with Shermain Bique-Charles Wickham also suggested that Lovell’s return might indicate an intention to re-engage and possibly reclaim leadership of the UPP in the future.
“He certainly can’t do much worse than Pringle has been doing. There is some idea in my head that this is what his long-term plan is,” he added.
Wickham pointed out that Lovell’s ambitions for leadership within the UPP could lead to internal conflict.
“The bigger issue for me is his expectations in terms of taking over the leadership of the UPP, either now or in the future. I think that will create some turmoil and bloodletting within the organization, which may ultimately benefit the Antigua-Barbuda Labour Party.”
In closing, he reflected on Prime Minister Brown’s reaction to this political landscape, suggesting, “The loss of the seat is a potential challenge the reality is that the amount of confusion it can create in the UPP may serve his (Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s) long-term interests far better.

If the UPP determined to recruit new stale-candidates from their past, is best the bring back Hon. Baldwin Spencer to and get rid of Comrade Kem Warner in Rural North.
Poor pooor Pringle, as his days as leader of that party numbered.
Mr Wickham’s comments is very confusing and distasteful as he speaks out of the two sides of his mouth
CHUPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS Wickham just move
I try not to be in politics in Antigua but I understand what Peter Wickham said. And to be honest, Harold Lovell’s candidacy for the All-Saints West seat is indeed promising, especially considering the significant changes within the United Progressive Party (UPP). With Anthony Smith’s switch to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), there’s a clear opportunity for Lovell to capitalize on the shifting dynamics. And that is something you cannot deny. And that is encouraging. Lovell has demonstrated resilience and growth since his last campaign, and it seems that voters are looking for a strong alternative. SO lets see wagwannn . Exciting times in homeland. We watching
While Peter Wickham’s analysis of Harold Lovell’s chances may stem from his experience, it raises some concerns. Firstly, the assertion that Lovell has a better chance now than during his previous campaign lacks substantial evidence. Political landscapes can shift dramatically, and the optimism expressed seems overly simplistic given the complexities of voter sentiment and party dynamics.
Moreover, relying on the idea that a candidate may benefit from an opponent’s departure could overlook the fact that Smith’s shift to the ABLP might consolidate support for him rather than weaken it. Wickham’s perspective may be too focused on surface-level changes and doesn’t account for deeper issues that could impact Lovell’s appeal to voters.
While hope is essential in politics, it is equally important for analysts to provide nuanced insights rather than surface-level optimism, especially as the political scene evolves.
I’m not a political person but from clear vision, UPP has nothing to contest a powerhouse like ABLP. I know ABLP is quite unbothered by this small checkers move
Chupz. I would let this come out of my mouth. Embarrassing
A pollster’s prediction that Harold Lovell could win the All Saints West seat against Anthony Smith is a huge statement. Lovell, a political heavyweight, is now challenging a sitting MP who defected from his own party. This is not just a contest of personalities; it’s a battle for the soul of the constituency. It pits a seasoned veteran against a new guard who’s made a controversial move.
You all realize that Wickham is just about his chichings right. He is all about his money. Yes he has been right a few times but he has also been wrong. And as he said its too early to tell things can change. I have nothing against Lovell he was raised right, he is a man of honor, well respected in the country and a way better leader than Gaston but that doesnt mean nothing. I believe Lovell can win that seat yes but Gaston wont allow it. Gaston is the kind of man who will spend his last dollar to make sure he succeeds. So Anthony Smith will be getting the largest chunk of change to ensure he wins. Its not dirty politics its just politics., Lovell if i were you i would leave politics alone
Tell Peter wickams go wash he husband cloths and he panty and them and leave Antigua affairs alone. Lovell re-entry to politics is generating jobs for you paid through a fool who wants to hold power at all cost to serve a few white people in Barbuda and their personal self enrichment.
