The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs reaffirms its dedication to youth development with its Annual Internship Programme, which kicked off several weeks ago.
As part of its mission to foster mental well-being and promote a balanced work-life atmosphere, interns enjoyed a cultural excursion on Friday, August 8, delving into the rich history and heritage of Antigua.
During the outing, the enthusiastic group of interns explored significant locations such as Nelson’s Dockyard, the Interpretation Centre, Blockhouse, and Shirley Heights.
These landmarks not only highlight Antigua and Barbuda’s unique historical narrative but also provide stunning vistas of the island.
The excursion allowed interns to gain a deeper appreciation of the nation’s cultural identity while taking a much-needed break from their office duties to rejuvenate their mental and emotional well-being.
Many participants found the experience both eye-opening and motivational. One intern expressed, “Discovering the history behind these sites has made me value our roots and recognize the importance of representing Antigua and Barbuda with pride.”
Another added, “It’s uplifting to see that the Ministry prioritizes our personal growth alongside our professional development.”
“This programme is focused not only on equipping young people for the workforce but also on nurturing future leaders who understand their heritage, prioritize their mental health, and embody a strong sense of national identity,” said Ambassador Dr. Clarence Pilgrim, Permanent Secretary. “Engagement with our history and culture is crucial for instilling the confidence, character, and dedication we aspire to see in tomorrow’s diplomats and decision-makers.”
The Ministry’s internship initiative is part of a wider agenda aimed at empowering youth, blending workplace readiness with comprehensive personal development.
This annual gathering has established itself as a key component of this initiative, providing young professionals with both educational and enriching life experiences.

Thats a good move. there are people born and living here who has never been to a national site. Im happy that the young ones are getting the exposure
This is great to hear! It’s so important that our young interns get a well-rounded experience, and not just a taste of office work. A cultural outing helps them appreciate the very things they might be representing on a global stage. This kind of investment in our youth’s personal and cultural development is a fantastic idea and a smart way to build future leaders.
