“Political Convenience”: Smith Responds to Lovell’s Candidacy in All Saints West

Anthony Smith

In a statement on social media, Anthony Smith, the current Parliamentary Representative for All Saints West, addressed the recent announcement that his predecessor and former United Progressive Party (UPP) leader, Harold Lovell, will be contesting against him in the upcoming general elections.

Smith, who unexpectedly left the UPP shortly after being elected and subsequently took on the role of Agriculture Minister, did not shy away from voicing his thoughts on Lovell’s return to the political landscape of All Saints West.

In his remarks, Smith pointed out the timing of Lovell’s re-emergence, suggesting that Lovell is attempting to position himself as a concerned advocate for the community.

“Let’s be real, this is not where Mr. Lovell invested his energy or interest over the years,” Smith stated, emphasizing that Lovell’s political history lies primarily in Fort Road and City East, areas he once represented but where many constituents felt let down by his leadership.

Smith expressed confidence in the community’s long-standing memory regarding political loyalties, implying that Lovell’s sudden interest in All Saints West might be an opportunistic maneuver aimed at regaining political favor. “We know who has been with us and who only comes around when it’s politically convenient,” he added.

The sitting MP took the opportunity to highlight the diverse support he received during his previous victory, contending that his election was not just a triumph for UPP supporters but a collective win for all residents of All Saints West.

“People from all walks of life… stood up and said, ‘We want someone who knows us, someone who has been with us, and someone who genuinely loves us,’” he remarked, asserting that his commitment to the community extends beyond election cycles.

His connection to the community is deep-rooted, stemming from years of involvement in local organizations and initiatives, which he cites as a testament to his dedication.

“This is not just where I work. This is where I belong,” he stated, attributing his drive to serve to the values instilled in him by his family.

Smith was keen to position his campaign philosophy as one of unity rather than division, revealing that he has made concerted efforts to engage with voters across political lines, including supporters of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

“Many of them responded not because they left their party, but because they trusted me,” he said, underscoring his commitment to the constituents of All Saints West.

In closing, Smith reinforced his role as a representative for all residents, regardless of political affiliation, saying, “I am the MP for every single resident of All Saints West. Red or blue, young and old, you are my priority, and you always will be.”

He urged constituents not to be distracted by “sudden visitors” but to continue the work they had started together, grounded in honesty, service, and real connection.

As the political climate heats up ahead of the elections, it remains to be seen how the dynamics between Smith and Lovell will unfold in the coming weeks.l Saints West

  1. The irony here is truly something else. Anthony Smith is criticizing ‘political convenience’ after he himself switched parties. For him to question Lovell’s commitment to the constituency after his own actions is a stretch. Harold Lovell has been a long-serving and dedicated political figure in this country, and his decision to run shouldn’t be dismissed so easily. This feels more like a political attack than a genuine concern for the people of All Saints West.
