At least four students are in contention for the top student award for this year’s CSEC results.
Local CXC Registrar Myrick Smith explained on state media that an announcement will made at a later date following the completion of queries.
“I don’t know when they will begin that process, but bearing in mind that the deadline is the 15th of September, it could take a few weeks for the results of the query to return, and so, as I said, we have decided to hold back a little on announcing the top student,” Smith explained.
Although he did not reveal the names of the four students, he did go into detail about their performances.
A few of which are being queried.
“We have one student who is leading at the moment that did a total of 20 subjects with 17 grade ones, two twos, and one three. We select the top student based upon the highest number of ones, so that person has the highest number of ones, 17 ones. The person in second place did 22 subjects with 16 grade ones, five grade twos, and a grade three but that person has queried. There was five grade twos and a grade one, so if that result returns and that person has an increased number of grade ones, then that person could very well be the top student.
“Interestingly, the person with the 17 ones from my understanding, has also queried, and so could increase the number of grade ones. We have a person potentially in third place with 21 subjects, 16 grade ones, and five twos and I think that person has queried again and then in, what do you call it, maybe fourth place, we had a student with 21 subjects with 13 grade ones and eight grade twos, and I think that person has queried again, so we want to wait and make sure that we do not face an embarrassing situation.”
“We would have announced a top student, but then subsequent results showed that somebody topped that result, so we’re going to wait for a couple of weeks, maybe up to a month, until before we announce the top student,” Smith declared.
1409 students sat the May/June CSEC exams with a pass rate of 77.4%, a marginal increase from last year.

These are very welcomed contentions. The examination performances are very commendable. Well done young folks. Keep pushing. 👏🏾
Congrats to all four! Hard work truly pays off.
Wow, 20+ subjects? That’s incredible dedication. These kids deserve serious recognition.
“Look wah hard work gi mi, nobody nah kind suh” is a part of a song our young ones should be able to scream on high!
I love the competitiveness. I like how so many students excel that there is a delay in the announz
