Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) has taken a significant step forward in child health with the launch of its Newborn Hearing Screening Program, the first of its kind at the hospital.
The initiative ensures that every baby born at SLBMC is screened early for potential hearing challenges, a crucial step in providing children with the best possible start in life.
“Hearing is essential for a child’s speech, language, social, and emotional development,” said Dr. Saleem Hughes, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SLBMC. “Early detection is the foundation of better outcomes. With newborn hearing screening now a standard part of our care, we can identify potential concerns immediately and work with families to provide the necessary support.”
Research shows that infants identified with hearing loss within the first six months of life, and who receive early interventions such as hearing aids, therapy, and family support, develop significantly better communication skills compared to those diagnosed later.
The screening process is simple, safe, and painless, using a small device to check a newborn’s hearing while they sleep. Families receive results promptly, and any baby needing further evaluation is guided to follow-up care and support.
SLBMC says the program marks a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand healthcare services and improve outcomes for children across Antigua and Barbuda.

great job
A painless, quick test that can prevent lifelong challenges? Absolutely worth it.
It’s a step forward, but are there enough audiologists to handle cases that need further evaluation?
Screening is only the first step what about follow-up treatment and support for children who need it?
It’s heartwarming to see his legacy remembered locally as well as globally. A true visionary in every sense.
