Bail Granted in Sensitive Sexual Offence Case

A young man accused of unlawful sexual intercourse will remain out on bail while his case makes its way through the courts.

The 21-year-old, who is self-employed, was brought before Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason in the St John’s Magistrates’ Court. After considering the circumstances, the magistrate set bail at $30,000. To secure his release, the defendant must deposit $3,000 in cash and provide two sureties.

Strict conditions were also attached. The accused must surrender his travel documents, check in with the police three times weekly, and is barred from making any contact with the complainant, who is 18 years old.

The court acknowledged that the man has no history of similar offences, a point weighed in his favour.

Due to the sensitive nature of the allegations, few details of the case have been made public. Committal proceedings are expected to take place on December 15.

Attorney Wendel Alexander represents the accused.

  9. It’s hard to understand how someone accused of a sexual offence can be out on bail. The courts may have their reasons, but this leaves victims and the community feeling unsafe. There needs to be more transparency on how these decisions are made.
