The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is reviewing measures to address growing concerns about motorised bicycles and scooters, following a reported rise in accidents and traffic disruptions.

The Minister responsible for Public Safety recently convened a meeting with the Police High Command, the Ministry of Legal Affairs’ drafting team, and other key stakeholders to examine the issue. The discussions focused on how to protect the public while ensuring that law enforcement can manage traffic safely and effectively.

The stakeholder group will develop recommendations, including potential legislative measures, to address the concerns of both riders and the wider community. The Minister will then present the proposed actions to Cabinet for approval.

Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to road safety and protecting citizens, while promoting responsible use of emerging transport options.

  1. Those owners of these motorized vehicles think they don’t have to adhere to the rules of the road

    • Motorized vehicles is a term used for all vehicles. Please be specific. Everyone acts like they don’t have to adhere to road rules. A bunch of clowns driving

  2. So the AG does not know that laws are already on the books and not enforced?
Obviously not even the police know that there are laws already on the books.
ENFORCE THE LAWS and end all the beauracracy.

  3. Legislation is one thing, but who’s going to enforce it? Police barely have the resources to manage regular traffic.

  4. Not all riders are reckless. Some people use these bikes responsibly. Don’t punish everyone for a few bad apples.

    • Do you know that if you keep your lips touching each other stupidity won’t come out your mouth? We see there bike riders, motorcycle riders and scooter riders, how they just go through traffic like they are police officers with sirens. They even cut infront of your car like “hit me if you back”. So yeah, they most times contribute to the accidents they get in

  7. Government need to be fair. Not everybody can buy a car. At least make a proper system for training and insurance.

  8. A good compromise would be special license and mandatory helmets. It’s about responsibility, not just punishment

  9. Police need to clamp down harder. Plenty of them don’t even have lights on at night. Accident waiting to happen

  11. I wonder if the new rules will also address noise pollution. Some of those modified scooters are a real nuisance.
