Inmates to Support National Beautification Efforts

25 September 2025 - 08:18

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is introducing a new initiative that will see inmates actively contributing to the upkeep and beautification of public spaces across the island.

Cabinet recently approved the establishment of a supervised inmate work team tasked with assisting in roadside maintenance and community clean-up projects. Officials say the programme will provide structured work opportunities for inmates while helping to improve the appearance and safety of neighbourhoods and public areas.

The programme is part of a broader effort to enhance environmental stewardship and civic pride, complementing the upcoming National Clean-Up Campaign in October, which will be led by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force under the theme “Love Where You Live.”

Officials emphasized that involving inmates in meaningful work is part of the Government’s commitment to rehabilitation, social responsibility, and fostering stronger connections between correctional services and the wider community.

  3. I remember growing up the seventies, prison inmates used to cut the bushes along the roadways in Antigua. I am happy that this program restarted again because Solid Waste can’t manage the task. The airport road is the main highway that tourists saw first on their arrival, and the overgrown bushes and debris along that road is in deplorable conditions.

  4. Why not? If they’re paying their debt to society, giving back through community service is the least they can do.

  5. Good step, but it needs to be more than just sweeping roads. Give them skills that can help when they’re released.

  6. This is a great idea, and as Bianca mentioned above, please teach them marketable skills so that they can have a way to support themselves upon their release. Doing so will surely result in a decrease in the recidivism rate.
