AT&LU Sticks With Current Leadership as No Election Takes Place

Bernard De Nully, President of AT&LU

The Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) will continue under its current leadership for another term after its annual delegates conference ended without any new nominations for executive positions.

The development came during the 86th annual conference of the country’s oldest trade union, held over the weekend. With no valid challengers submitted before the September 12 deadline, the existing executive committee was declared retained.

In his address to more than 200 delegates, President Bernard de Nully urged members to hold fast to the union’s founding principle: “The Unity of Labour Is the Salvation of Our Country.” He also floated the idea of creating an AT&LU Credit Union and encouraged members to make saving a habit, even if only a small portion from each paycheck. De Nully also reminded delegates of the union’s responsibility to defend migrant workers, describing them as integral to Antigua and Barbuda’s development.

The business session on Day Two featured a surprise announcement from General Secretary Alrick Daniel, who revealed that he would not seek re-election. But when it came time for elections, a resolution was introduced confirming that none of the nominations or proposals received met the requirements to proceed. With delegates voicing loud approval, the resolution was carried, effectively keeping the existing leadership team in place.

Union officials later described the gathering as a success, saying it had met the expectations of both delegates and leaders, even without the drama of a contested election.

  6. Perhaps the membership feels the current leadership is doing a good enough job. Still, it would have been good to reaffirm that through an election process.
