The Government has declared October as National Anti-Litter Month, marking the launch of a sweeping National Cleanup Campaign (NCC) spearheaded by the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF).

The initiative comes in response to the pressing problem of improper waste disposal, derelict vehicles, abandoned houses, and illegal dump sites, all of which endanger public health and tarnish the country’s environment.

A rapid assessment by the ABDF underscored the urgency of the campaign, with findings that just one sector of St. John contained 31 derelict vehicles, 31 abandoned houses, and two illegal dumping grounds.

Led by the ABDF in partnership with the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), the Ministries of Health, Works, and Education, as well as schools, NGOs, and community groups, the campaign is now being rolled out across Antigua and Barbuda.

Cleanup activities began in St. John and will extend to communities nationwide, including Codrington, with ministers joining citizens on the ground.

Beyond the removal of waste and debris, the campaign places strong emphasis on sustainability, with schools promoting environmental programs, influencers and sporting personalities driving awareness, and community stakeholders committing to regular cleanup efforts well beyond October.

The Cabinet praised the ABDF for its leadership, commended all agencies and volunteers for their contributions, and urged every citizen to take part in the effort. Officials stressed that the initiative must spark a lasting cultural shift towards cleanliness, pride, and environmental responsibility in Antigua and Barbuda.
