LISTEN: PM Browne Says Gov’t Will Vacate Buildings If Landlords Keep Threatening Over Rent Arrears
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has issued a firm warning to property owners who rent buildings to the government: continued threats or attempts to lock out public offices over outstanding rent will not be tolerated.
Speaking over the weekend, Browne said the government will immediately vacate and relocate from any privately owned building if landlords persist with what he described as “hostile tactics.”
He reminded owners that while the government has occasionally fallen behind on rent payments, it has always demonstrated good faith and a track record of eventually clearing arrears.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come months after the government was locked out of the Ryan Building due to unpaid rent — an incident that drew public criticism and disrupted the operations of key government offices.
