Schools Remain Closed as Flood Watch Extended Across Antigua and Barbuda

All public schools across Antigua and Barbuda will remain closed today following advice from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service, which has extended the Flood Watch due to continued adverse weather conditions.

In a statement issued early Friday morning, the Ministry of Education confirmed that the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff.

Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has led to water accumulation in several low-lying areas, making road conditions unsafe and raising the risk of flash flooding in some communities.

The Meteorological Service said unstable weather associated with a lingering system continues to affect the island, and further rainfall is expected throughout the day.

Residents are being urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and closely monitor official weather updates.

The Ministry noted that it will continue to liaise with the Met Office and the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) to assess conditions before making any further announcements regarding school operations.

Private institutions have also been advised to exercise discretion and prioritize safety in determining whether to open.
Authorities say the public will be updated once the Flood Watch has been lifted and it is safe for normal school activities to resume.

  4. Online classes could’ve been useful right about now. Weather like this keeps shutting down the whole system. We need a backup plan for the education sector.
