Work to begin on drainage for new cemetery

Work on the drainage system for the Tranquility Park Cemetery is expected to begin soon, as Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant provided an update on the situation.

There was a visit by the contractors who have been secured to do that service, there’s a visit to assess the situation to look at the plans, as the plans for the drainage system were there from the very inception, and so, they were assessing those plans with the current situation, because what would have developed would probably may require some changes to the drainage system as per the current plans and designs that they have in their possession, and so an assessment has been made, and they are in preparation for starting work,” Merchant shared.

Last week, the Government approved the installation of a new drainage system at the recently opened Tranquility Park Cemetery, following severe flooding caused by recent heavy rainfall.

The decision came after the Minister for Health Sir Molwyn Joseph briefed Cabinet on the impact of more than nine inches of rain that fell within a 24-hour period, which resulted in significant waterlogging at the cemetery site.

Sir Molwyn explained that the unusually intense rainfall had also affected the St. John’s and Valley Church Cemeteries, underscoring the need for improved drainage infrastructure at burial sites.

In response to the request, Prime Minister Gaston Browne and members of the Cabinet approved the installation of an effective drainage system at Tranquility Park and instructed the Ministry of Health to commence the works without delay.

  6. Tranquility park shows that there’s no level of love or respect for the dead. Not only these graves were filled with water till is submerged and not only that the flowers were all over the place but! But let’s talk about how you could place a dead in a pool of water and then cover him with mud! Not dirt! Mud!
