Approval has been given for the establishment of a 24-hour shelter in Antigua.
The shelter will be constructed through a partnership with the Integrated Health Outreach (IHO) and the government.
The shelter will be dedicated to victims of gender-based violence.
“The initiative is part of government’s ongoing commitment to gender equality, women’s empowerment and the protection of vulnerable citizens. The proposed shelter will provide a safe space for survivors of abuse, offering comprehensive support services including counselling, vocational training and empowerment programs aimed at restoring independence and self-sufficiency,” Cabinet Spokesperson Maurice Merchant explained.
There was no indication on when or where construction would take place.
