Government Highlights What It Calls Historic Transformation of Barbuda

The Government has described its progress in Barbuda as “historic,” citing new land legislation, infrastructure, and tourism investments that it says are reshaping the sister island’s future.

In the 2026 Speech from the Throne, Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams said Barbuda is “becoming a net contributor” to the national economy for the first time. Major projects highlighted include the new International Burton-Nibbs Airport, a planned seaport, paved roads, street lighting, and expanding developments by PLH, Rosewood, Nobu, and others.

He also emphasized the repeal of the 2007 land legislation, replaced with a new law granting freehold title to Barbudans who have lived on plots for generations. According to the Speech, this change has ended “an injustice” and created a foundation for growth and property ownership.

The Government says its long-term goal is to make Barbuda “shine like a diamond”.

  6. Any claim of ‘historic transformation’ has to be matched by genuine community involvement. Progress without the people it affects is just a project, not development.
