Jamilla Kirwan

Jamilla Kirwan says five decades of life lessons have prepared her for the responsibility of serving as Antigua and Barbuda’s newest Independent Senator.

According to Observer Media Jamilla Kirwan described her appointment as a significant responsibility that she’s approaching with both humility and gratitude.

The media relations specialist, who is marking her 50th year, says life’s challenges have equipped her for this legislative responsibility.

“Life throws you many curve balls as I’ve gone through my life and I’m in my 50th year, thank God,” she said. “Life has taught me so many different things. Resilience is one of them, and empathy is another. And I believe as an Independent Senator, I will bring a balanced approach to our debates within the Senate.”

Drawing parallels between her new role and her current position with the Calvin Ayre Foundation, Kirwan explained that both involve service to others, though she views the Senate position as something greater.

“Well, as you can well imagine, this is a huge responsibility, and I embrace it with humility and with gratitude,” Kirwan told Observer Media. “As you know, the work I do with the Calvin Ayre Foundation is a job of service, and so this is something new for me. But this is a higher calling, and I’m embracing it.”

Kirwan acknowledged the support she’s received and expressed appreciation to Governor General Sir Rodney Williams for selecting her for the position.

When asked about her legislative priorities, the new senator indicated she’s not yet ready to identify specific bills or policies, but revealed her interests lie in supporting young people, advancing women’s issues, and protecting vulnerable citizens.

“I’m not prepared to speak on the first issue that will be tackled, but what I can tell you is that I’m very involved in youth empowerment, in the empowerment of women, and the advancement of even those who are vulnerable,” she said.

Kirwan replaces Kiz Johnson, who resigned to contest the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party primary in St. Phillip’s South.
