Jamal ‘Skinny’ Bourne

In an incident so startling it has left many struggling to comprehend what unfolded, a 24-year-old Guyanese national, Jamal Bourne — a murder suspect known by the alias “Skinny” — died after accidentally shooting himself in the head during a live broadcast on TikTok.

Bourne was streaming in real time alongside another armed man when the unimaginable happened. Wearing a balaclava and openly handling a firearm, he appeared to be issuing threatening remarks to viewers as hundreds watched. Moments later, the weapon discharged unintentionally, with the fatal shot captured live before a stunned online audience.

Viewers who had tuned in expecting bravado and provocation instead witnessed a sudden, irreversible tragedy unfold on their screens. The livestream ended in chaos, disbelief and horror as Bourne collapsed from the gunshot wound.

**WARNING! Although the video edited, it is still disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised:

He was later pronounced dead, bringing an abrupt and shocking end to a broadcast that has since been widely described as unbelievable and deeply disturbing. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the presence of firearms and the identity of the second individual seen in the livestream.

The incident has reignited concerns about the dangers of illegal firearms, reckless online behaviour, and the growing trend of violent acts being broadcast in real time on social media platforms.

  3. This tragedy didn’t just happen because of one reckless individual. TikTok bears serious responsibility for what we are now witnessing. For far too long, the platform has rewarded shock value, violence, and reckless behaviour with views, reach, and algorithmic promotion. Young people have learned that the fastest way to get attention is to be outrageous, threatening, and dangerous and TikTok has created an environment where that behaviour thrives. A man openly brandishing a gun, wearing a mask, issuing threats, and streaming live should never have been allowed to continue long enough for a death to occur on camera. Where were the safeguards? Where were the immediate shutdowns? Where was the duty of care to viewers, many of whom are young and impressionable?
TikTok cannot continue to hide behind “community guidelines” while bloodshed unfolds in real time on its platform. This is what happens when likes, shares, and virality are valued more than human life. The platform has normalized reckless stunts, fake gangster culture, and performative violence, turning dangerous behaviour into entertainment. Young people are chasing clout at any cost because social media has taught them that attention equals value. This death is not just an “accident” it is the result of a toxic digital culture that TikTok has helped create, fuel, and profit from.
