Attorney Wendel Alexander has told Antigua.news that he is moving urgently to the High Court to seek bail for a young mother charged in a firearm matter, noting that her infant child remains dependent on her breast milk.
Alexander disclosed that the woman’s boyfriend has admitted that the firearm and ammunition belong to him, but said the Director of Public Prosecutions has indicated a desire to review the file and consult further with the investigating officer before any determination is made.
The disclosure comes after 21-year-old Terry Williams and 20-year-old Shanyea Crump, both of Nut Grove, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel and were jointly charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Williams is a chef, while Crump is a preschool teacher. The couple is the parents of an 11-month-old son.
Because firearm matters are not bailable at the Magistrate’s Court, both accused were remanded to His Majesty’s Prison.
According to information presented in court, police attached to the Criminal Investigations Department Task Force executed a search warrant at a property in All Saints on Monday morning, where they allegedly recovered a Ruger 9mm pistol along with seven rounds of ammunition.
Alexander said bail documents are currently being prepared, and Crump is expected to swear to her affidavit at the earliest opportunity, as part of an urgent application to the High Court.
