Charges Against Breastfeeding Mother in Firearm Case Could Be Dismissed

Attorney Wendel Alexander and Shanyea Crump

Charges against 20-year-old preschool teacher Shanyea Crump could be “disposed of as early as Wednesday, according to her attorney, Wendel Alexander, following discussions with the prosecution.

Crump and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Terry Williams, both of Nut Grove, were jointly charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition after appearing before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel last week. The couple shares an 11-month-old son.

However, Alexander told Antigua.news that based on discussions with the prosecutor and defence counsel, the matter concerning Crump is likely to be disposed of today.

The development comes after Williams reportedly accepted full responsibility for the firearm and ammunition from the time of his arrest.

According to Alexander, Williams confessed during investigations at the police station, admitting knowledge and ownership of the Ruger 9mm pistol and seven rounds of ammunition allegedly recovered during the execution of a search warrant at a property in All Saints on Monday morning.

Crump, meanwhile, has denied any knowledge of the firearm.

Because firearm matters are not bailable at the Magistrate’s Court, both accused were initially remanded to His Majesty’s Prison.

Alexander had indicated that he was preparing to move urgently to the High Court to seek bail for the young mother, noting that her infant child remains dependent on her breast milk.

He further explained that the Director of Public Prosecutions signaled an intention to review the file and consult with the investigating officer before making a final determination.

Based on those discussions, Alexander now says there is a strong likelihood that the charges against Crump could be disposed of when the matter returns to court on Wednesday.
