In a dreadful incident in southern Germany, an 82-year-old man has been crushed to death by an excavator crane at a car wrecking yard.

Authorities explained that the elderly German national suffered fatal injuries after climbing unnoticed into a vehicle that was scheduled for dismantling.

Police have confirmed that a 60-year-old employee at the scrapping firm was operating heavy excavation equipment used daily to scrap old cars. The worker used the grab arm of his crane to crush the roof of the vehicle before flipping it over onto its roof.

It was at this point that a witness noticed that there was tragically a lifeless person inside the crushed car and frantically raised the alarm.

The grievous situation played out at a site in the Obersendling district of Munich and despite firefighters, paramedics, and police racing to the scene, there was little they could do.

The fire service had to use special equipment to recover the victim’s body from the car, which according to a police spokesperson did not belong to the deceased man. He apparently had been at the yard to collect scrap metal.

In a gruesome parallelism, this horrific tragedy occurred in the same Obersendling district of the city as that which was discovered to be the last registered address of the alleged perpetrator of a shocking ramming incident two weeks ago, which left dozens of people injured, including a mother and her child in a pram.

On that occasion a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove thorough a crowd of 1,000 demonstrators marching through the Munich streets.

The city’s traffic police have launched a full investigation into the scrapyard accident to determine the cause.
