Antigua and Barbuda is advancing plans to strengthen its diplomatic footprint in Africa, with government officials confirming that serious consideration is being given to opening an embassy or diplomatic mission in Abuja, Nigeria.
Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene disclosed that the initiative has been under review for some time, noting that previous efforts to establish a presence in Nigeria did not yield the desired results.
According to Greene, an earlier attempt involved appointing a representative, Wallace Williams, to head the mission. However, the arrangement fell short of expectations, prompting renewed efforts by the government to re-engage Nigerian authorities.
The minister revealed that he travelled to Abuja two years ago to restart discussions and met with Nigeria’s then foreign minister to explore pathways for formalising diplomatic ties.
He also raised concerns about the previous representative continuing to present himself in an official capacity despite failing to meet the government’s objectives.
Greene emphasized that establishing a diplomatic mission in Nigeria is part of a broader strategy to deepen Antigua and Barbuda’s engagement with Africa, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and bilateral cooperation.
“We want to position Antigua and Barbuda as a central hub in strengthening Africa-Caribbean relations,” Greene stated, adding that the government is eager to take a leading role in fostering closer ties between the regions.
The move builds on growing partnerships between Antigua and Barbuda and African nations. Among these is the Air Peace agreement, which has seen significant Nigerian investment in LIAT Air, as well as a recent healthcare arrangement with Ghana that has brought more than 100 nurses into the local system.
Officials believe that establishing a physical diplomatic presence in Nigeria could further accelerate these partnerships and open new opportunities for economic and cultural exchange.

we always welcome a move like that
