Prime Minister Gaston Browne says elections could be called on short order

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has signalled that Antigua and Barbuda could head to the polls within the next 90 days, while cautioning that the timeline could be even shorter.

Speaking recently, Browne made it clear that preparations should begin immediately, both for voters and political candidates.

“Even if I said 90 days, it could be before,” the prime minister stated, hinting at the possibility of an earlier-than-expected election date.

He is now urging citizens across the country to ensure they are properly registered and in possession of valid voter identification cards ahead of the anticipated polls.

“I am appealing to the people to get re-registered because yes, there will be general elections, and the earlier you get your card, the better,” Browne said.

The prime minister also called on political candidates and party supporters to intensify their ground efforts over the coming weeks, emphasizing that the next three weeks will be critical in mobilising voters.

“I am asking the candidates to go out on the road in the next three weeks in particular to get our supporters ready,” he added.

The remarks have heightened political anticipation across the country, with speculation already mounting that a snap general election could be imminent.
