Opposition MP Richard Lewis is projecting strong confidence that he will retain his seat in St. John’s Rural West when voters return to the polls in the next general elections.

Speaking during Friday’s Parliament proceedings, Lewis made it clear he intends to run on his record, insisting his performance in office has earned him continued support from constituents.

“I stand here proud and can run on my record,” he said, expressing certainty that once ballots are cast and counted, he will be returned to the House of Representatives.

Lewis argued that his time in office has been defined by service and delivery, telling colleagues he has consistently acted in the best interest of the people he represents. According to the MP, that track record has already resonated with voters.

He suggested that the political outcome in the constituency is all but decided, declaring that residents have “made up their minds” and are not shifting their support.

In a pointed response to political rivals, Lewis brushed aside criticisms and competing claims, using a familiar proverb to underline his position — suggesting that talk alone will not change the reality on the ground.

The Rural West representative also struck a more reflective tone at moments, referencing the importance of purpose in leadership and emphasizing that obstacles do not define one’s path — a message he said resonated deeply with him.

Despite the intensifying political rhetoric ahead of the next election cycle, Lewis maintained that his connection to the constituency remains strong, describing himself as deeply rooted in the community.

“I am Rural West to the bone,” he said.

With campaigning expected to ramp up in the coming days, Lewis’ remarks signal that he is preparing for a political contest — but one he clearly believes is already leaning in his favour.
