“Conduct yourselves in a manner that reflects the dignity of our nation.”
That was the central message from Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, Arthur G.B. Thomas, as he addressed the nation amid final preparations for the April 30 general elections.
Thomas called on all citizens to approach election day with discipline, respect, and strict adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing that behavior at the polls will be critical to maintaining public confidence in the outcome.
“Order, compliance and mutual respect are not optional. They are essential to the credibility of the outcome,” he said, urging voters to respect election officials, security personnel, and supporters of opposing political parties.
While placing strong emphasis on conduct, the ABEC Chairman also issued a firm reminder that only voters with valid identification cards will be allowed to cast ballots.
“If you have not yet replaced your voter’s ID card, you must do so immediately. No elector can be permitted to vote without a valid voter identification card,” he stated.
The Commission, he noted, has extended working hours and increased staffing to facilitate the replacement process, but warned that the responsibility now lies with the public.
Thomas also reminded political parties of their legal obligation to remove campaign materials from polling divisions ahead of election day, stressing that voting spaces must remain neutral and free from undue influence.
With just days remaining before the polls open, the ABEC Chairman urged all eligible voters to prepare, comply with the rules, and participate peacefully in the democratic process.
“Participate responsibly, peacefully and lawfully,” he said, reinforcing the call for a calm and orderly election day across Antigua and Barbuda.
