“Follow the Rules”: ABEC Issues Clear Do’s and Don’ts Ahead of April 30 Poll

With just days to go before Antigua and Barbuda heads to the polls, the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is urging voters to strictly adhere to election day rules designed to ensure a smooth and orderly voting process.

In a public advisory, the Commission outlined a series of “Do’s and Don’ts” to guide electors on Thursday, April 30.

Polling stations will open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m., with voters encouraged to arrive prepared and follow all instructions given by the Presiding Officer.

Among the key requirements, voters must have their voter identification card ready and ensure they carefully review the ballot before making their selection. Electors are reminded to vote for one candidate only, as marking more than one will invalidate the ballot.

ABEC is also encouraging voters to ask questions if they are unsure about any part of the process.

However, the Commission is taking a firm stance on prohibited behaviour.

Cell phones and smart devices will not be allowed inside voting areas, and arrangements will be made for their collection upon entry. Voters are also warned against wearing political party colours, bringing campaign materials, or engaging in disruptive conduct at polling stations.

“No election paraphernalia will be permitted within 100 yards of polling stations,” the advisory stressed.

The Commission says these measures are critical to maintaining order, neutrality, and the integrity of the electoral process.
