Pringle to Be Sworn in as Opposition Leader; UPP Announces Four Senate Appointments

Representative-elect for All Saints East and St. Luke, Jamale Pringle, will officially assume the role of Leader of the Opposition on Monday when he is sworn in during a ceremony at Government House.

The announcement was made Friday in a statement issued by the United Progressive Party (UPP), which also confirmed the four individuals selected to represent the Opposition in the Senate.

Governor General Sir Rodney Williams is expected to administer the appointment at 1 p.m. on May 11.

The Opposition senators named by Pringle are Chester Hughes, Jonathan Wehner, Malaka Parker and Ashworth Azille.

In the statement, Pringle said the appointments form part of the party’s effort to rebuild and strengthen its parliamentary representation following the recent general election.

“I am confident that these colleagues will bring to the Senate the representation the Party needs at this time of rebuilding and the quality of debate the Nation needs to keep the Browne Administration accountable,” Mr. Pringle says.

Pringle said the selections were made with both the party’s immediate needs and long-term goals in mind, noting that the appointments are intended to enhance the UPP’s political capacity while helping to prepare the foundation for a future administration.

The Opposition Leader-designate also urged party supporters and members of the public to lend their support to the incoming senators as they prepare to take up their responsibilities in the Upper House.

The appointments come in the aftermath of the general election, which saw the UPP retain its position as the country’s main opposition party, despite holding fewer seats in Parliament.
