Senator Chester Hughes
Veteran trade unionist and longtime labour advocate Chester Hughes has vowed to bring fierce representation and fearless advocacy to Parliament after being sworn in Monday as an opposition senator for the United Progressive Party (UPP).
Speaking to ABS moments after recieving his instruments of appointment at the Government House, Hughes made it clear that his appointment is not ceremonial — but part of what he described as a renewed mission to defend workers, protect democracy, and hold the government accountable.
The seasoned Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union official, known for decades of outspoken labour activism, said the opposition has a responsibility to be a powerful voice for ordinary people, especially at a time when many citizens are struggling with rising costs and economic pressure.

Hughes warned that opposition members cannot afford to remain silent while citizens grapple with mounting social and financial challenges.
“We are there to represent the people. We are there to ensure that the government remains accountable to the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” he said following the swearing-in ceremony.
His return to Parliament signals a major boost for the UPP’s Senate team, with Hughes bringing years of industrial relations experience and a reputation for aggressively defending workers’ rights.
Throughout his career, Hughes has been deeply involved in labour disputes, wage negotiations, and advocacy for better working conditions, making him one of the country’s more recognizable trade union voices.
Political observers say his appointment injects experience, energy, and confrontation into the opposition benches at a time when the ruling administration controls a commanding majority following the April 30 general election victory.
Hughes also emphasized that the role of the opposition goes beyond political criticism.
“We are not there just to oppose for opposing sake,” he indicated, stressing that senators must examine legislation carefully and ensure decisions made in Parliament benefit the wider population.
