Newly sworn-in Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle has praised the individuals selected to serve as Opposition Senators, describing them as experienced, committed, and capable of strengthening democracy and representing the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Pringle made the remarks on Monday during the official swearing-in ceremony held at the restored Government House, where he was formally appointed Opposition Leader by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams.

Addressing supporters, party members, dignitaries, and invited guests, Pringle thanked the Governor General for presiding over the ceremony and expressed appreciation to those who attended to support the United Progressive Party and its new parliamentary team.

“It is always a pleasure to work with you and your fine staff,” Pringle told Sir Rodney Williams while also thanking supporters for their “pride, love and support” shown toward the new senators and the party.

During his address, Pringle congratulated newly appointed Senator Chester Hughes, describing him as “a political veteran, a seasoned parliamentarian, and unwavering trade unionist” who has consistently advocated for the working class.

He also praised Senator Jonathan Wehner, calling him “a young man with an old head on his shoulder,” while describing him as a legal scholar, gifted communicator, and a positive example for young people across the country.

Pringle further commended Senator Ashworth Azille, who he said had been described as “our Martin Luther King,” praising his work as an advocate for workers and his service as a veteran educator committed to Antigua and Barbuda.

The Opposition Leader also addressed the absence of Malaka Parker, explaining that she was overseas attending to family business and would be sworn in at a later date.

Pringle noted that Parker is nearing completion of her law degree and highlighted her experience serving in government, the trade union movement, and the private sector.

“She will continue to stand as a model of achievement for our women and girls,” Pringle said.

According to Pringle, the appointments have already been positively received by the public, adding that the senators have the full confidence and support of the United Progressive Party.

“The United Progressive Party and I have the utmost confidence in their abilities and in their commitment to the business of state,” he stated.

Pringle ended his remarks by encouraging the senators to proudly carry out their responsibilities in service to the country.

“Our democracy is counting on you,” he declared.
