Malaka Parker was officially sworn in as a Senator on Monday during a ceremony held at Government House, marking a new chapter in her public service journey and bringing years of trade union advocacy into the national legislature.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at 10 a.m. in the Investiture Room at Government House and was hosted under the authority of Governor General’s Deputy Sir Clare Roberts and Lady Roberts.

Parker, a former President and Shop Steward of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), enters the Senate with a long record of advocacy on behalf of workers and ordinary citizens.
In congratulating Parker on her appointment, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union described her elevation to the Upper House as a proud moment for the labour movement and praised her years of dedicated service.
“Her steadfast advocacy on behalf of ordinary people has now been elevated to the national legislature, and we are confident that her diligent and passionate service will continue to make a meaningful impact on the lives of workers and the wider community,” the union said.
Parker’s appointment adds another experienced voice to the Senate and places a longtime labour advocate in a position to contribute to national discussions and policymaking.
Her swearing-in comes amid a series of recent appointments and transitions following the formation of the new administration.
