Sixteen of the 17 senators of the new Antigua and Barbuda Senate were sworn in this Wednesday morning, completing the formalities following the April 30 general elections.
Senate President Senator Alincia Williams-Grant and Vice President Senator Philip Shoul were re-elected to their respective positions before the oath of allegiance was administered to the remaining senators, with only the seat reserved for the Barbuda Council remaining unfilled.
No confirmation has been received as to who the council will appoint to that position.
On the government side, Senator Shenella Govia returned as Leader of Government Business in the Senate.
Joining the government senate benches include senators Kendra Beazer, Abena St. Luce, Senator Angelica O’Donoghue, Shaquan O’Neil, Joel Rayne, and Tiffany Strand-Peters.
Senator Lamin Newton and Senator Colin Brown also returns to the Senate.
The opposition benches also were sworn into the Senate with Senator Chester Hughes serving as minority leader.
Hughes previously served as a Senator and member of parliament for All Saints East and St. Luke.
Joining him are Senator Jonathan Wehner, Senator Malaka Parker, and Senator Ashworth Azille
Senator Jamila Kirwan returns to her post as the independent senator after being appointed earlier this year following the resignation of her predecessor Kiz Johnson who now is Member of Parliament for St Philip’s South.
The Throne Speech is scheduled for May 26.

Chester Hughes needs to go sit down and give someone else a chance. He is not the only person who has knowledge and experience in labour law matters. His ideas are old, and someone younger with new ideas will be better. Remember, the youth are our future, and the little ones shall lead us.
