Antigua and Barbuda and the Sustainable Markets Initiative Forge Landmark Partnership to Drive Green Investment, Climate Resilience and Tourism Growth Ahead of CHOGM
Antigua and Barbuda is intensifying efforts to shape a results-driven agenda for the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), with government officials engaging key international stakeholders to secure partnerships focused on sustainability, climate resilience and tourism investment.
During meetings held in London on May 21, Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Transportation and Investment Michael Freeland, along with Director of Tourism for UK and Europe Cherrie Osborne and Third Secretary at the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission Caleb Gardiner, met with Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), and members of her senior team.
The Sustainable Markets Initiative, founded by His Majesty King Charles III, is a global CEO network aimed at accelerating sustainable solutions and investment.
Discussions centered on opportunities to develop practical and investment-ready initiatives that could be showcased at CHOGM and continue beyond the summit.
Freeland positioned Antigua and Barbuda as an emerging leader in sustainable luxury tourism and reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming Barbuda into a fully green and eco-friendly destination. He pointed to major developments including the recently opened airport and plans for expanded port infrastructure.
He stressed that Antigua and Barbuda remains open to innovation and international investment, while welcoming the SMI network as a strategic partner capable of turning ideas into measurable projects.
Osborne highlighted the continued growth of the country’s cruise, sailing and yachting sectors while advocating for coordinated regional investment strategies.
She also raised concerns over the impact of sargassum on tourism and coastal communities, warning that the issue is reducing tourism activity and affecting fisheries and livelihoods.
The SMI’s proposals for commercial uses of sargassum were discussed as a possible avenue for both environmental protection and economic opportunity.
Several areas for future collaboration were identified, including sargassum management and reutilisation, disaster-risk insurance for climate-vulnerable nations, Barbuda’s green transition, renewable energy projects, port modernization, electric mobility infrastructure, and coral reef restoration initiatives.
Officials also explored sports diplomacy opportunities linked to CHOGM, including a proposed cricket match expected to become part of the summit programme, alongside an under-23 youth fixture. Discussions also touched on sponsorship opportunities and support for a planned CHOGM concert.
Officials credited High Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill with facilitating the discussions ahead of an anticipated SMI visit in June.
Speaking on her behalf, Caleb Gardiner said Antigua and Barbuda remains focused on transforming international partnerships into meaningful action that delivers long-term environmental and economic benefits across the Commonwealth.
The 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will take place in Antigua and Barbuda from November 1–4, 2026, under the theme: “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.” The meeting is expected to focus heavily on innovative financing and partnerships aimed at driving sustainable and inclusive development across member states.
