Minister of Health Michael Joseph is encouraging the public to place greater importance on mental wellness as Antigua and Barbuda continues to observe Mental Health Awareness Month.
In a statement marking the observance, Joseph stressed that mental health must be treated with the same level of seriousness as physical health, while calling attention to the stigma that continues to prevent many people from seeking support.
“Far too many individuals continue to suffer in silence, often afraid to seek help because of the stigma and misunderstanding that comes with it,” the minister said.
Joseph said Mental Health Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that seeking help should never be viewed negatively and encouraged persons to speak openly about mental health challenges while supporting those who may be struggling.
“It is okay to ask for help, to speak openly about mental health challenges and to support those who may be struggling,” he added.
The health minister also reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s commitment to strengthening mental wellness initiatives across the country through increased awareness and improved access to care and support services.
“The Ministry of Health remains committed to promoting mental wellness, increasing awareness and ensuring that persons have access to the support and care that they need,” Joseph stated.
He further called on the public to work together in creating a more compassionate and understanding society.
“Together, let us continue to foster a society rooted in compassion, understanding and hope,” the minister said.

True true thanks, help with the wait time in Emergency rooms in the front and also in the back, waiting from night to next day is ridiculous 🙄
Ending the stigma is going to take a lot of doing
