Minister of Social and Urban Transformation Rawdon Turner received one of the strongest endorsements during Tuesday’s Throne Speech as the government praised his leadership in tackling social challenges while spearheading efforts to transform St. John’s.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams said Turner has successfully led the country’s social transformation programme over the past 17 months, with the administration expressing satisfaction over the ministry’s performance.
The speech highlighted the ministry’s “Zero Hunger Program,” which provides food assistance and supermarket vouchers to vulnerable residents, including individuals with little or no income.
“As my government sets out to make our country an economic powerhouse, the aesthetics of our capital city cry out for attention,” the Governor General declared while outlining Turner’s growing urban transformation mandate.
Turner, an architect by profession, has been tasked with removing derelict buildings from St. John’s and converting neglected spaces into areas of renewed economic and social activity.
The Throne Speech also encouraged property owners across commercial St. John’s to renovate and repaint aging buildings as part of a wider effort to modernize the capital.
Government pointed to the refurbishment of the St. John’s Police Station and Government House as early examples of the renewal drive now underway.
Officials also announced that the National Archives is next on the list for restoration works.
The speech further emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving workplace conditions for public servants by addressing mold and other hazardous conditions in government buildings.
Minister of State Kiz Johnson was also praised during the address, with government expressing confidence in her ability to help advance the ministry’s ambitious agenda.
The strong focus on urban renewal signals that Turner’s ministry is expected to play a central role in reshaping the appearance and functionality of St. John’s over the next five years.
