Government Announces EC$300 Million UWI Expansion Plan

The government has announced plans to spend EC$300 million on a major expansion of the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus as officials push forward with what they describe as an education renaissance.

During Tuesday’s Throne Speech, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams said the Five Islands Campus has exceeded expectations since opening just four years ago.

The campus reportedly grew from fewer than 350 students at launch to nearly 2,000 students today, with master’s degree programmes already being offered and PhD programmes planned for the future.

The expansion project is also expected to include new primary and secondary schools for the Five Islands community.

The Throne Speech further declared that tertiary education at UWI will eventually become tuition-free for citizens as part of the government’s wider vision for national development.

Education Minister Daryll Matthew was praised for his leadership and commitment to advancing educational opportunities for young people.
