The government is moving ahead with plans to completely rebuild the Keeling Point Pier, promising a stronger and safer facility for fishermen who rely on the site as a vital part of their livelihood.

The announcement came during a recent visit to the fisheries landing site by Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries and the Blue Economy Randy Baltimore and St. John’s Rural West MP and Health Minister Michael Joseph, who met with Fisheries Division Coordinator Conrad Simon and members of the fishing community.

The visit focused on concerns raised by fishermen regarding the condition of the pier, safety at sea, and the need for improved infrastructure at the busy landing site.

Safety concerns have been heightened following a recent shark attack involving a local fisherman. Baltimore said he visited the injured fisherman and was relieved to learn that his injuries were not life-threatening and that he is recovering.

“We are thankful that the fisherman is recovering well,” Baltimore said, while encouraging fishermen, divers, and other marine users to remain vigilant while operating at sea.

The minister acknowledged reports of increased shark activity in the area and said the Fisheries Division is continuing to monitor the situation. He noted that officials are exploring ways to improve communication with fishermen and the public when sharks are sighted near coastal waters.

Attention also turned to the condition of the existing pier, which fishermen say has deteriorated despite repairs carried out several years ago.

Joseph said discussions with stakeholders revealed growing concerns about both safety and security at the facility. He noted that many fishermen depend on the pier to earn a living and stressed the importance of ensuring that the infrastructure remains reliable and functional.

According to the minister, the government has decided that the best long-term solution is a complete reconstruction of the structure.

Plans call for the replacement of the existing wooden support piles with concrete piles and the construction of a reinforced concrete deck designed to withstand the harsh marine environment.

The new facility will also feature a redesigned T-shaped layout, replacing the current L-shaped structure. Officials believe the new design will provide additional working space and improve access for fishermen while accommodating future growth in activity at the site.

Joseph said further measurements are currently being conducted before construction begins to ensure the design maximizes available space and adequately serves the needs of users.

The ministers also highlighted improvements already completed around the facility, including the clearing of overgrown vegetation that had become a concern for fishermen. The cleanup has improved visibility and security while reducing opportunities for theft and other unwanted activities.

Simon welcomed the improvements and emphasized the importance of maintaining clean and orderly fisheries landing sites. He urged fishermen to work alongside the Fisheries Division to keep the area clean and protect the surrounding marine environment.

The redevelopment of the Keeling Point Pier forms part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s fisheries sector by improving infrastructure and creating safer working conditions for those who make their living from the sea.
