Minister Rawdon Turner Calls on Fathers to “be the rock” in their child’s life as the Social Protection Board Marks Father’s Day with Annual Appreciation Drive

Fathers across St. John’s were greeted with smiles, handshakes and tokens of appreciation on Friday as the Social Protection Board hosted its fifth annual Father’s Day appreciation drive at the VC Bird Bust on Market Street.

The initiative recognized fathers from all walks of life and celebrated the vital role they play in nurturing families and strengthening communities.

Speaking on behalf of the Social Protection Board, Operations Manager Mary Baltimore said that fatherhood extends far beyond providing financial support for a family.

“Fatherhood is a profound responsibility… one that goes far beyond provision. It is found in the quiet sacrifice, the words of encouragement, the lesson in discipline, the protection offered in difficult times, and the unwavering commitment to nurturing the next generation,” she said.

Baltimore also acknowledged the many men who embrace fatherhood without a biological connection, extending appreciation to “the uncles, the grandfathers, the coaches, community leaders, the male guardians who step into families or into fatherly roles.”

Also representing the Board, Algernon James said the annual initiative was designed to ensure that “each and every father” is recognized and that the organization continues to “touch their lives.”

Among those honoured was Alcide St John of Golden Grove, the oldest father present at 87 years old.

Reflecting on fatherhood, St John said, “You have children and you have to take care of them… because when you reach this kind of age, they know you support them. So they, in return, have to look after you.”

He encouraged younger men to seek employment, provide for their families and “always have a good intention when you go out.”

Meanwhile Minister of Social Transformation Hon. Rawdon Turner also addressed the gathering and received a token of appreciation. He emphasized the importance of celebrating fathers and urged men to remain actively involved in their children’s lives.

“It’s important for us to celebrate fathers just as much as we celebrate mothers,” Turner said, adding that fathers should “be present, be active and be that rock that your child needs to stand on,” regardless of their relationship with the child’s mother.

The Social Protection Board concluded the event by extending Father’s Day greetings to fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, guardians and father figures across Antigua and Barbuda, recognizing the many men who selflessly step into fatherly roles and positively shape the lives of others.
