Man Sentenced to 3.5 Years for Sexually Assaulting Five-Year-Old Great-Niece

A High Court judge has sentenced a man to three years and six months in prison after he admitted to sexually assaulting his five-year-old great-niece.

Justice John Spencer imposed the sentence on Friday after the defendant pleaded guilty last month to a single count of serious indecency.

The offence occurred between March and September 2024 while the child was visiting her grandmother, the court heard.

According to the prosecution’s case, the child and her grandmother were watching television in a bedroom when the grandmother briefly left the room. During that time, the defendant remained with the child and sexually assaulted her.

The abuse came to light after the child returned home and complained of pain to her father. He urged the child’s mother to report the incident, but when no report was made in the months that followed, he contacted police himself in January 2025.

A subsequent medical examination found signs of an infection.

Following his arrest, the defendant admitted during a police interview that he had inappropriately touched the child but denied digitally penetrating her. He was later charged with serious indecency.

The court was told the man was 56 years old when the offence was committed.

Justice Spencer sentenced him to three years and six months’ imprisonment.
