A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway after the passenger ferry MV Barima capsized off the coast of Guyana during an overnight voyage from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.

According to preliminary reports, the vessel was carrying 116 passengers and crew when it encountered difficulties and transmitted a distress call late Saturday before overturning near the mouth of the Pomeroon River.

Emergency response teams, including the Guyana Coast Guard and other maritime agencies, were quickly deployed to the area. Authorities say 53 people have been rescued so far, while efforts continue to locate those who remain unaccounted for.
